Grasse, located north of Cannes, is known as the world’s perfume capital. During the Middle Ages, the city was known for its tannery. The concept of scented gloves led to the development of the perfume industry.
Due to the increasing popularity of this product, the industry began to grow. Today, there are more than 30 factories producing perfume in Grasse. The most famous are Galimard, Molinard and Fragonard.
These three companies offer free tours. During these tours, you will learn the different steps in perfume production. After the tour, you can create your perfume and take it home. Located in the centre of Grasse, the MIP is a museum that traces the perfume industry’s history over 3,000 years.
Beautiful view
Grasse is located on a hill overlooking the sea and the region. The old town is charming and colourful and is called the ‘City of History and Art’.
Stroll through the narrow streets and drink a coffee or a glass of cold rosé on one of the city’s many terraces. The southern location also offers a relaxed atmosphere. Some notable buildings include the Town Hall and the Roman Catholic Cathedral.
Since the arrival of the Campus Grasse, a rejuvenation has taken place with many international students. There are even student housing for sale (and for rent) in the old city prison.
Nature
Grasse is a beautiful place to visit, surrounded by forests, caves and mountains. It is the fourth largest city in the Alpes-Maritime department and offers great places to relax and enjoy nature. Although Napoleon could not stay in Grasse long, the environment still strongly influenced him. When you reach the city from Cannes, you can see the Belle-Epoque building of the former Casino of Grasse, now the Palais des Congrs. You will see some of the city’s most impressive villas and mansions a short distance away.
The Place aux Aires is located in the centre of the city. It has a fountain in the middle and several terraces and restaurants. You can also try local specialities such as zucchini flower fritters in this area.
