Welcome to the French Riviera , also known as the Côte d’Azur, where mountains meet the Mediterranean, offering turquoise waters, sunshine, and breathtaking landscapes. For cycling enthusiasts, this place is a paradise with a variety of terrains, from sparkling coastal roads to legendary mountain passes.
Why Choose the Côte d’Azur for a Cycling Holiday?
The diversity of cycling routes is impressive. You can enjoy flat rides along the glistening coast, admiring the grand properties of the rich and famous or venture inland through beautiful perched villages where time seems to stand still. The Côte d’Azur is also an excellent destination for a family holiday, with its chic atmosphere, amazing food, cultural attractions, and, of course, those beautiful beaches.
Our Cycling Adventure
My father and I are sea lovers so when we cycle we embark on a ride along the promenade des anglais. We take the Vélo Bleu since we don’t have bikes of our own and we enjoy soaking in the stunning views of the Mediterranean.
But here’s the real deal: the best part of our cycling escapade to Nice? It’s the delicious meal we devour at Di Piu, with its panoramic view of the sea. According to my dad, that meal is what gives us the extra strength to pedal all the way back!

Where to Ride?
Here are my top five rides in this region, each beautiful and incredibly different from the others. Keep your camera handy, as you’ll want to capture the moments!
- Eze: A hilltop village near Monaco with incredible views, a 12th-century castle, narrow medieval streets, and a beautiful exotic garden.
- Sainte Agnès: A ‘perched’ village near Menton, offering stunning views of the Mediterranean and claimed to be one of the most beautiful villages in France and the highest coastal village in Europe.
- Antibes Market: If you love markets, the charming Provencal market in Antibes is a must-visit.
- Socca in Nice: In the old town of Nice, don’t miss recommending the local delicacy of Socca (chickpea flour pancakes), especially at Chez Pipo since 1923.
- Saint Paul de Vence: Another stunning hilltop village, one of the oldest medieval villages on the French Riviera, known as the ‘artists’ village with modern and contemporary art museums and galleries.
Looking for more mountain cycling routes ?
- Col de la Bonette: Located in the Mercantour National Park, one of the highest passes in Europe.
- Col de Vence: Close to Nice, offering a demanding climb with tight turns and magnificent landscapes.
- Col de la Cayolle: Nestled in the Southern Alps, offering stunning panoramas of the surrounding valleys.
- Col du Turini: Known for its iconic stages in the Monte Carlo Rally, also a popular route for cyclists.
- Col de la Lombarde: At the Franco-Italian border, offering a unique cycling experience.
When to Visit?
With an average of 300 sunny days a year, the Côte d’Azur is a haven for cyclists year-round. The best times to visit are spring and autumn, offering mild temperatures and avoiding the peak summer crowds.

Why Cyclists Should Choose the Côte d’Azur and Especially Nice?
- Superb Riding: The routes are varied, offering breathtaking views between the sparkling azure coast and the Alpine foothills.
- Pro Endorsement: Nice and its surroundings are a training ground for many professional cyclists, including Chris Froome and Geraint Thomas.
- Easy to Get To: Nice is easily accessible from many destinations with a well-connected airport.
In conclusion, the Côte d’Azur offers an unforgettable cycling experience, combining exceptional landscapes, varied roads, and a rich cultural atmosphere. Whether you’re a seasoned cyclist or a casual rider, this destination has it all. So, pack your panniers, saddle up, and explore this beautiful French region.
